What Would We Do Without Food Packaging?

The event “Innovative Food – From Regional Production to Product”, organized by the Association of Bavarian Industry e.V. in cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism, brought together around 180 participants. The focus was on the challenges and opportunities facing the food and nutrition industry: climate change, shifting consumer habits, and increasing demands for sustainability and resource efficiency.

Brückner Maschinenbau was invited to shed light on the entire value chain – particularly the role of packaging. In his presentation, Sebastian Ruhland, Director Product Development at Brückner Maschinenbau, explained how crucial packaging is for product protection and extended shelf life, and how it can help reduce food waste. He also presented our approaches to circular packaging: mono-material solutions, the use of recyclates, and bioplastics.

Post-consumer recyclate (PCR) gives packaging a second life. It allows us to significantly reduce resource consumption and cut CO₂ emissions by up to 70 percent. The biggest challenge, however, is the limited availability of high-quality material and the strong fluctuations in quality. In addition, PCR for food packaging is currently a big challenge.

Although packaging was not the central topic of the event at first glance, interest was high. Discussions highlighted that packaging plays a key role in product protection, shelf life extension, and reducing food waste – making it an essential factor for sustainable food production.
