Enabling Future Technologies

From e-mobility and energy storage to advanced electronics, high-performance films are used in numerous applications that are relevant to a wide range of future technologies.

Whether for packaging, batteries, or high-tech applications, modern plastic films have long been much more than thin materials. They perform essential functions in many applications and can contribute to the development of numerous new technical solutions.

New technologies in film manufacturing demonstrate how performance, material efficiency, and future readiness can be combined.

Customer Benefit:

High-performance films create new opportunities for technical applications where material efficiency, precise product properties, and reproducible processes are essential. Advanced stretching technologies support the development of innovative film concepts for future-oriented markets such as packaging, energy, electronics, and mobility.

Precision Meets Performance

Ultrathin: When Less Can Do More

Quality Through Intelligent Process Control

Innovation as a Driver for Entire Industries

The production of high-performance films begins with a highly complex process: stretching. During this process, the material is deliberately stretched to optimize properties such as strength, transparency, and barrier performance.

In addition to established methods, one technology is gaining renewed importance: simultaneous stretching. Unlike sequential stretching, the film is stretched in two directions at the same time, enabling precisely controlled material properties.

The result:

  • more uniform material structure

  • higher product quality

  • new possibilities for extremely thin films

A clear trend across many applications is the significant reduction of material thickness. Modern Brückner production lines now enable the manufacture of films measuring just a few micrometers, including ultrathin structures of approximately 2 µm.

Why this matters:

  • lower material consumption

  • reduced weight

  • improved resource efficiency

Particularly in energy storage and electronics applications, reduced material thicknesses can provide technically relevant advantages.

Technological progress is reflected not only in the material itself but also in the way production processes are controlled.

New approaches enable precise control of forces and movements during stretching through LISIM® technology, using thousands of interconnected system components that are coordinated in real time.

The advantages:

  • smoother, more stable production processes

  • consistent film quality

  • higher reproducibility

This can support the transfer of processes to industrial-scale production.

Modern film solutions are now used across a wide range of industries:

  • packaging

  • energy and batteries

  • electronics

  • automotive

The combination of material efficiency and functional properties creates additional opportunities for a variety of technical applications.

Example: A Key Technology for Energy and Mobility

Battery technology is one of the most dynamic areas of application. New material concepts are currently emerging that increasingly replace conventional metal foils.

Instead of thick copper or aluminum foils, ultrathin polymer films with metallic coatings are being used. These so-called Composite Current Collector (CCC) films can, depending on the application, offer characteristics such as:

  • reduced metal content

  • potential for reducing material-related emissions

  • application-specific properties relating to safety and performance

Modern film technologies therefore represent one approach to supporting the continued development of batteries for applications such as electric mobility and energy storage.

Outlook: Thinner, More Efficient, More Powerful

Current developments point toward a clear trend: greater performance with less material, while requirements for sustainability and efficiency continue to increase.

Advances in film processing demonstrate how complex challenges can be addressed through more precise processes, new material concepts, and continuous technological development.

Future technological developments will continue to focus on combining demanding technical requirements with the efficient use of resources.
